Natto Photo (c) Setsuko Yoshizuka Have you had Japanese natto (fermented soybeans)? Since it has strong smell, it might be hard for many people to eat natto at first. Actually, natto is a popular Japanese breakfast item and is usually eaten uncooked. Let's see the most common way of eating natto.

I love natto!! It is one of my most favorite foods. I add a raw egg to mine and put over hot rice. (The heat “cooks” the egg). Thank you for the nattokinase info on it. I always thought it had great nutritional value. I find I often crave it when I feel tired or rundown and it seems to perk me right up after I eat it!

Despite natto being a healthy food, I refused to eat it because I could not get beyond the strong smell. After discovering “no smell” natto at the Marukai Store here in Honolulu, now I enjoy eating natto. The brand is Mizkan. Kin No Tsubu Niowa Natto (Fermented soy beans w/sauce.) There are three flat styrofoam containers in each package found in the freezer display case. This natto does not have the offensive smell, only the natural aroma of the soy bean. The natto has the characteristic foamy-stringy-stickiness when mixed vigorously with chopsticks.

Whoever discovered the way to remove the bad smell is a genius. One of my favorite ways of eating niowa natto is with sliced green onions over tama gohan.

The smell of natto never put me off. I kinda relish the taste. However I find it very difficult to eat. It is very cumbersome and embarassing because of the stringy stickiness.
