Definition: Traditional Japanese-style sweets are called wagashi as wa means Japanese-style and gashi (kashi) indicates sweets in Japanese. Western-style sweets are generally called yogashi. Common ingredients for wagashi are rice, rice flour, beans, wheat flour, sugar, and so on. Butter and oil are rarely used. Wa-gashi can be very sweet, and they are basically served with green tea. Designs of wagashi often depict the four seasons.
