Oden is a popular Japanese hot pot, which includes daikon radish, hanpen (fish cakes), chikuwa (fish cakes), boiled eggs, konnyaku (yam cake), and more. These ingredients are simmered in kelp-based soup stock for hours. It is usually cooked in a big ceramic pot called donabe at home. Oden goes good with Japanese sake and is often served at Japanese sake bars. Convenience stores in Japan also sell oden to go. Oden keeps you warm.

Oden is served with karashi (Japanese hot mustard). Put a tiny bit of karashi on each bite of ingredient when you eat. Oden is a good dish during the winter. Enjoy!
