Meat Balls with Sweet and Sour Sauce

Deep-fried meat balls are served with sweet and sour sauce. Meatballs are generally called nikudango in Japan. These sweet and sour meatballs are good for bento lunch boxes. Try not to put too much sauce in that case.
Japanese Pork Recipes

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 lb. ground pork
  • 1/4 lb. onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp ginger juice
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp panko, or bread crumbs
  • For Sauce:
  • 1 /1/2 cup water
  • 2 tsp chicken buillon powder
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp viinegar
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 4 Tbsp water and 2 Tbsp katakuriko, or cornstarch

Preparation:

Mix ground pork, onion, ginger, egg, soy sauce, and panko in a large bowl. Knead well. Shape small balls. Heat oil to 360 degrees F in a deep skillet. Deep-fry meat balls until well-done. Drain and set aside. Put water, chicken bouillon, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, and ketchup in a deep pot and bring to a boil. Stir in the katakuriko and water mixture. When the sauce is thickened, stop the heat. Serve meat balls on plates and pour sweet and sour sauce over them.
*Makes about 2 dozens meat balls
